About Special Olympics Deutschland

A Global Movement

Special Olympics Deutschland (SOD) is the German organization of the world's largest sports movement for people with intellectual and multiple disabilities, officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy-Shriver, a sister of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, Special Olympics today has more than 5 million athletes in approximately 170 countries and jurisdictions.

SOD is a non-Olympic umbrella organization within the German Olympic Committee (DOSB) and today provides more than 40,000 people with intellectual disabilities with self-determined choices ranging from disability-specific to inclusive opportunities.

Beyond sports, SOD sees itself as an everyday movement with a holistic offering. This includes the Healthy Athletes® program, the family program, the Scientific Academy, Special Olympics Unified Sports®, and a large volunteer base to create a sense of achievement, opportunities for participation, and also push social processes.
